Drupal Migration & UX

Transforming the digital experience of the courts system.

Overview

Strengthening the UX of NC courts.

In 2017, the NC Commission on the Administration of Law and Justice undertook a comprehensive evaluation of the NC judicial system. Their recommendations for strengthening our courts included steps to better accommodate and serve self-represented litigants.

Many of these recommendations involve enhanced use of technology, expanded customer assistance, and improved education programs, which were incorporated into the Electronic Public Access project.

Nccourts.gov

Atlantic BT was engaged to redesign the nccourts.gov website, with a focus on:

  • Modern, mobile-friendly user experience
  • User-oriented content structure
  • Self-help for most common tasks
  • Education about the Judicial system and process
  • Efficient administration

This was a massive project addressing a user base covering thousands of judicial staff across all 100 NC counties and all citizens of NC. We incorporated extensive user research, ranging from Courts staff interviews and focus groups to public usability tests to gain a comprehensive understanding of user needs.

The resulting data was used to build detailed Service Blueprints of the most commonly performed tasks. This data, combined with an extensive content analysis and information architecture development, served as the foundation for a new design incorporating the modern user interface features that users expect.

The new NCCourts.gov website provides over 10,000 pages of content to users in an easily searchable format.

Juno Intranet

In another segment of the courts systems’ efforts, Atlantic BT migrated the Juno intranet data from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8. This project included:

  • Auditing functionality and planning the migration order for dependencies
  • Migrating necessary content and configuration, including data from third-party modules with no established migration path
  • Migrating a deprecated data structure to a new data structure supported in Drupal 8
