Magento is an ecommerce platform built on open source technology written in PHP. It provides online merchants with a flexible shopping cart system, as well as control over the look, content & functionality of their online store. Magento offers powerful marketing, search engine optimization, & catalog-management tools.

With Magento, there are no limitations to how you design your store (as long as you know some code, or are willing to hire someone to do it for you)

If you have a storefront that you want to look and behave in a certain way, Magento is the platform for you.

Varying Cost

Magento is an open source platform which means it’s available in the public domain and therefore free to use.

With Magento, you will have to pay for your own hosting ($100-$1,000+/month), plus any additional add-ons for apps and integrations.

Large Community

The Magento community has an enormous database of user-generated content that you can query against and get the answers to most of your questions.

Being an open-source platform, many of the challenges you will run into can be easily solved by leaning on this community.

Coding Knowledge

Let’s be up front: if you’re a non-technical person, Magento has a steep learning curve that involves a lot of technical and developmental knowledge.

Consistently updating and upgrading not only the platform but the supplementary app add-on’s will require technical wherewithal.

Magento is labor intensive and it’s not a platform you can just get up and running quickly.

Coding takes time, quality assurance takes time, migrating from a staging environment to live production takes times.

Apps & Add-Ons

Magento boasts over 3,000 available apps and add-ons to drive powerful marketing, CRM integrations and much more.

Average cost for a single app or add-on is around $100.

BigCommerce is one of the largest ecommerce solutions available in the industry. It’s an all-in-one solution that allows you to build a fully-fledged ecommerce store without needing to purchase hosting or themes from third-party companies. It offers one of the most powerful store management and analytics interfaces the ecommerce industry has ever seen.

BigCommerce offers an out-of-the-box solution that includes hosting, themes and apps, giving you access to multiple payment gateways, including blogging capabilities, marketing tools and more. Similar ease of use as rival Shopify.

Multiple Sales Channels

BigCommerce offers seamless integrations into marketplaces like eBay, Amazon and Google Shopping, but it also includes in-person sales through integration with Square POS as well as the ability to sell on Facebook and Pinterest.

No Transaction Fees

BigCommerce does not charge transaction fees on their monthly plans, however, you will be obligated to to pay fees charged by the payment gateways like PayPal, Stripe, Square and This is outside of BigCommerce’s control.

Merchants get a break on shipping with BigCommerce. Feature quick set up for configuring shipping options. You can also give your customers more accurate shipping quotes with real-time rates from such carriers as USPS, UPS and FedEx.

Extra Fees

This mainly concerns stores that accrue more than $125,000 in revenue per year or process over 2,000 orders every year. If you go beyond either of those numbers, you’ll pay the $199/month flat fee along with an additional $80/month for every additional 1,000 orders you process.

Expensive Themes

BigCommerce offers very visually appealing, modern styles for their storefronts. However, there are only seven free themes, and the most popular premium themes range between $175-$200. Something to consider for your initial investment and start-up costs.

Shopify is a complete ecommerce solution that allows you to set up an online store to sell your goods. Popular by it’s simplicity, Shopify allows you to organize your products, customize your storefront, accept credit card payments, track and respond to orders.

Ease Of Use

Shopify does not require knowledge of various programming and coding languages. Much of the setup and maintenance is very intuitive and user-friendly.

24/7 Support

Unlike more complicated eCommerce solutions, Shopify offers 24/7 phone support, live chat, and email functionality. When you need help, they are there.

Available Themes

If you are eager to get your store online quickly, Shopify offers over 100 out-of-the-box themes to get you off to a fast start. Unfortunately, only 10 of them are free.

Transaction Fees

Based on whichever monthly plan you sign up for, the transaction fees will vary from 2.4% to 2.9% of every transaction, including an additional $.30 per transaction.

Shopify is a software as a service (‘Saas’) tool – this means that you don’t own it but rather pay a monthly fee to use it.

As long as you have access to a web browser and the internet, you can manage your store from anywhere.

Not Great For SEO

Regular pages for your store as well as blog posts have a URL structure that is not ideal for Search Engine Optimization. Shopify uses subdirectories such as /pages or /blog/news and in the world of Google rankings, this is not preferred.
