Website Redesign
There are many reasons companies choose to redesign their websites. Sometimes it's a matter of aesthetics but most often the old website isn't performing as well as it used to.
Redesigning or renewing your website can result in huge performance improvements but there are several important things you should consider when redesigning your site.
- Existing Traffic—A good web developer can retain all of the existing traffic and improve the design without missing a beat. However if you're not careful, a gung-ho developer can replace your site with something that looks better and in the process destroy its ability to rank well and attract visitors.
- Performance Benchmarks—Prior to doing a redesign it's important to know a few benchmarks that represent the performance of the current site. Most commonly these are: Bounce Rate, Avg. Pages per Visitor, Avg. Time per Visitor, Goal Conversion Rates and Total Traffic. After redesigning the site these same benchmarks should be revisited and evaluated against current performance to judge the success of the effort.
- Redesign Goals—It's important to know what you are trying to achieve with your redesign. An unfocused effort will very rarely result in the return on investment you're looking for. Goals can be as simple as improving the benchmarks above, or it could be to reduce complaints from visitors or add some new functionality. Figure out what you want to achieve before you start. If you don't know where you're going any road will get you there.
- Cost Doesn't Equal Value—Few people look for the cheapest doctor when they are sick and if your website isn't healthy, the cheapest web developer isn't likely to be the best choice either. If it's worth redesigning your site it's worth choosing a top web development firm to get the job done right.
