Domain types
- Does it matter what type of domain I purchase for the new company I am starting? For example should I purchase a .com, .net, or .org?
It depends. About 95% of the time, you will want to purchase a .com. The reason is that most people assume that whatever your domain name is, that it will end it .com. However, it is important to purchase all of the other domain extensions as well so that nobody can build a site and attempt to imitate your business or act like they are you. There have been issues in the past where someone will buy the .net domain and create a website that is talking negatively about the original .com company.
From a search engine standpoint .gov and .edu domains are better because historically these sites are created by government, government related organizations, colleges and universities. If you qualify as one of these categories, it is best to get one of these extensions if possible.
