Difference in Linux and Windows
- I registered a domain name and I want to setup a basic hosting account. What are the differences between Linux web hosting and Windows web hosting?
Unless you plan to use any advanced features included in a hosting plan you won’t see much difference between Linux and Windows web hosting. Linux hosting is typically used if you want to build your website with PHP, Ruby, Perl, and often Java. Windows hosting is typically used if you want to use ASP.NET, classic ASP, or Coldfusion. If you really just need a basic account with no advanced features, the only difference you’ll probably notice between Windows and Linux is that the Linux operating system is case sensitive. If you have a site that has previously been hosted in Windows and you move it to Linux you may find that some links are broken or other problems exist. That’s because if you created the links manually you might have accidentally linked to “page.html” instead of the real name “Page.html,” meaning your visitors will get a dead link.
