It really depends. SEO companies charge a wide variety of prices depending on their experience, knowledge, client resume, reputation, and position in the market. SEO packages can range starting from $250/month to upwards of $10,000/month for a larger site. Given that SEO is a long term marketing strategy almost all SEO companies will charge an upfront setup cost and a monthly retainer for ongoing work. Fortunately if you are creating a lot of good fresh content you will see much better results because search engines place content #1 when ranking sites.
SEO may also involve some design and programming time depending on the state of your current site. You may have to pay for new landing pages, call to action designs, code clean-up or in a worst case scenario, a website re-design.
Keep in mind that everything is dependent on the competition and the keywords you are looking to rank for. If you want to rank on the first page of google for national, broad, highly competitve keywords, then it is going to take a lot more time, effort, resources, and money to achieve those goals.
