Buying business with successful website
- I am negotiating with a broker to buy a business and the company has a successful website. Is there anything I need to look out for and if I buy the business what information do I need from the buyer so that I can take over the website?
If any significant part of your investment is related to the website or technology then there is certainly some careful due diligence that should be undertaken. Since the company has a successful website the first step is to understand what is making the website successful and make sure everything you need to continue being successful is passed along as part of the sale. Here are some things you should investigate:
- Domain Name – Make sure the seller owns the domain name and it will be sold with the business
- Website – Make sure the seller owns the actual website code and it is specifically included in the assets for sale
- Marketing – Be sure you understand how the website is generating business. Whether it is through search engines, pay-per-click, affiliate programs, etc.
