Putting aside the functionality of the page and site, the web page is a picture.  The web page picture is made up of many elements, some text and some graphic.  All of these elements form the overall picture and communicate messages to the website visitor  (aka viewer of the picture). 

As you say, &quot;The most important nonverbal message is to align with the values of the company.&quot;   Spot on. 

The thousand words told by the picture need to quickly present the purpose of the site, together with its uniqueness, values and benefits to visitors.  Quickly, consistently and coherently.
